The grape belongs to the family of the vines and to the genus Vitis. It needs a warm climate for good crop. The fermentation of the fruit results in the wine, magical elixir and delight for many. It is believed that it originated in the Caspian Sea in the Asian region and from there spread to all countries of the Mediterranean coast. It is believed that the grape was the first fruit cultivated by man and there are traces showing that in the prehistoric period, and re-cultivated in Europe. In fact the Greeks and Romans made especially a true cult wine. The grapes came to America by Spanish settlers. Spread, but caught an illness because of a bug and was destroyed. One of these insects (phylloxera) came to Europe and there was a huge plague all the vineyards were destroyed or damaged, so they had to catch an American strain, which had become immune to the disease and they could reproduce the strains in Europe. It is now cultivated in warm regions, but in 1800 it grew even in parts of northern Europe and from there came the greenhouses, because they built a house with windows and heating, to keep the grapes at the right temperature. The major grape-producing countries are: Australia, Europe (Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, Turkey, Greece), America (California, Chile, Argentina) and South Africa.
